Convergence Technology SolutionsConvergence Technology is a catch-all term for the growing number of systems, products, protocols and ideas that allow integration between data networks and telephone systems.
Following are some examples of convergence technologies, what they do, how they can help your business, and some common pitfalls we know enough to avoid:
VoIP is the hot technology that is driving the convergence revolution. Simply put, it means transmitting telephone conversations through a data network rather than traditional phone lines.
Fax-to-the-desktop involves receiving and sending faxes directly to and from your computer.
Unified messaging means directing all your incoming communications into one “inbox”.
This can be a general term for any phone/computer convergence technology, but most often it is used to indicate the ability of the computer and the telephone to share data and communicate with each other.
A T1 line is a type of connection to the phone company (or other service provider) that can be used for either Internet access, telephone lines or both.

Convergence is the middle-ground: In order to properly implement these new technologies, a service provider must have expertise in both the telephone/voicemail and IT fields.
At Clocktower Technology Services, Inc., we have that expertise.
Most phone system dealers have little practical knowledge of computers and networking. Therefore, they struggle to properly implement technologies such as fax-to-the-desktop or unified messaging (explained below). Most IT companies are only cursorily familiar with the intricacies of PBX (business telephone) systems. When they try to implement cost-saving VoIP systems, the results are usually less than spectacular.
